I stopped by a communal darkroom and gallery called Yo! Darkroom last week to see a show I saw advertised on a postcard that I picked up somewhere in this city. The first thing that stood out to me about the postcard was the artist's name matching my sister's. Upon a closer look at the image she'd created I was intrigued. The exhibit was definitely one of my favorites that I've seen since I moved to this city. Sienna Freeman's work is mixed media comprised of photography and collage. Freeman's ability to interconnect the grotesque and the beautiful into these lithe and provocative and deeply wonderful compositions gets me pretty strong. Explore her flickr page if you like. I couldn't seem to find a website.
I look forward to the privilege of filling my future home with the work of so many artists who astound me and who nearly live in my neighborhood.
Speaking of art, I'll be showing my own for the month of March at Deep Sleep Boutique in Olde
City, which is a district of galleries and boutiques here in Philly. Deep Sleep is a fashion boutique that sells funky, modern, colorful clothes with a strong sort of punky Asian flavor. I thought my colorful pop China portraits would be a good fit for one of their art shows. There will be an opening on first friday, the 7th of March. Come out for wine and cheese or tofutti!
Here are the front and back of a postcard I designed for the show.
And speaking of China, I'm going there on March 12th! A sudden trip has come together from a serendipitous facebook notification I received from the organization that formerly sent me there. They needed to replace a teacher who had to go home sick and of the responses they received, they chose me. So I'll be the new foreign teacher at an elementary school in Taiyuan in Shanxi Province. I will be away from the 12th of March until the 25th of June. I'll be back to my beloved Philly in no time. I'm excited about this sudden and timely opportunity to reconnect with a culture I love so dearly and I'm eager to do some photo essays I've been planning ever since I returned from China the first time.
I'll miss you!
